Dental Emergencies

No one plans on having an emergency situation; they just happen. When they do, you need someone who will be there to help you. If you have a dental emergency, Dr. Boyle will make sure that you get the care you need to keep your smile healthy.

What qualifies as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that threatens the life your tooth. That is, anything that may cause you to lose your tooth. Some examples of a dental emergency that we see more often are:

Cracked Tooth – The severity of the crack will have a lot to do with whether this an emergency or just a situation that needs to be taken care of quickly. In either case, call us immediately to figure out what your next steps should be. If it is not an emergency, we’ll help set up an appointment to get you in to see Dr. Boyle as soon as possible to get your tooth taken care of.

Broken Tooth – Breaking your tooth is painful and is definitely an emergency. Call our office to find out how you should proceed, and then come in to have Dr. Boyle take care of you.

Dislodged Tooth – Time is of the essence when a tooth has been dislodged. Call our office for instructions, and try to get here as quickly as you can. Drive safely, and Dr. Boyle will take care of you and your tooth once you arrive.

What should I do with a tooth that has been knocked out?

If you have a knocked-out tooth, the first thing you need to do is locate the tooth. Try not to touch the tooth by the root. Pick it up by the dental crown only, if you can. Then, you will want to clean it with warm water and submerge it in a cup of milk if you cannot place it back in its socket. This will help keep the tooth safe until you get to the office. Depending on your situation and how quickly you can get here, Dr. Boyle may be able to put it back into place.

Should I go to the emergency room?

If your emergency happens outside of our business hours, and you know you need immediate attention (such as bleeding that won’t stop), then the emergency room may be your best option.

Can Dr. Boyle see me without an appointment?

For all of our current patients, you will be treated in an emergency situation the same day that you come in. We will make any necessary arrangements to get you the care you need as quickly as you need it.

What is an abscess?

An abscess is a pocket of infection that is inside your gums. It may feel painful or just like pressure inside your gums. Call Dr. Boyle immediately if you think you may have an abscess, as this type of infection is extremely dangerous and must be addressed quickly.
