Some people just don’t like their smiles. Maybe their teeth are discolored or crooked. Maybe they have big gaps between their teeth that make them self-conscious about how they look.
If you don’t smile because you don’t like your smile, you’re missing out on some pretty big health and social benefits. At Marineland Dental Care, in Kennewick, WA, can give you a smile that you’re proud of so you don’t miss out on these benefits.
Smiling Helps Your Heart
In 2012, two psychological scientists named Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman conducted a study about smiling. In the study they looked at how different types of smiling can affect the ability to deal with stress.
In the study, volunteers were set up to do different stressful tasks (like putting their hand in a bucket of ice water). Then the researchers monitored participants’ heart rates while they did the tasks. Some of the participants were told to smile.
The ones who smiled had lower heart rates after the tasks than the ones who didn’t smile. Some people held chopsticks in their mouth, forcing them to smile. Even those people had a substantial reduction in heart rate compared to those who didn’t smile at all.
So we know that smiling can slow the heart and relax the body. People who smile and laugh often are less likely to develop heart disease. Some studies have indicated that people who smile more tend to live longer.
Smiling Helps You Socially
Think of the people you’ve met that you’ve warmed to instantly. Didn’t they have a big ole smile?
- A beautiful smile is your calling card to the word. It brings a lot of social rewards.
- A good smile makes you more attractive to people.
- People are more likely to approach a person who smiles.
- A great smile can make you appear more confident and self-assured. That could earn you more success in your job.
- Smiles naturally lift the face and can make you look younger.
