Today I have a few special facts to share with you about your teeth and oral health. Your teeth are meant to last forever, and I believe you’ll see things a bit differently after reading this post. So, here are 4 dental facts that you can’t afford to ignore.
1. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, outpaces tooth decay or dental trauma in claiming teeth. It can often happened quickly and without little to any warning. Gum disease is caused by infection following the buildup of plaque and tartar below the gum line. This problem can happen to anyone at any age, and it’s not curable in its later stages. Gum disease is so dangerous because it can destroy the gums and surrounding bone, causing the tooth to become loose. It’s like a little termite gnawing away at the foundation of your house! If it goes untreated, the gum disease will win and spread throughout your mouth.
2. Brushing cleans only the crown
It’s said that 90 percent of any iceberg is beneath the surface. While a majority of the tooth is located above the gum line (about 65 percent), a large portion of the tooth is beneath the gum line. Some toothbrushes on the market can effectively get beneath the gum line, but you’ll still need to use more than a toothbrush to clean the entire tooth. That’s where floss comes in. Floss allows you to clean beneath the gum line and especially between teeth, an area cavity-causing bacteria love to hide.
3. Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease in children
Children in America and across the world face a huge risk of tooth decay. Research shows that more than 50 percent of children in the U.S. will have tooth decay before the age of 5. You can protect your children against tooth decay with early dental visits (we recommend visiting the dentist with your youngster before their first birthday) or with treatments like fluoride treatment or dental sealants.
4. Toothbrushes need to be swapped out every 3-4 months
If you’re not using the right tools, you can’t properly clean your mouth. Even the most efficient toothbrush can’t reach every corner of your mouth, but a worn down toothbrush certainly can’t get the job done. The American Dental Association recommends that you exchange your toothbrush (or toothbrush head if you have an electric toothbrush) every three to four months. Part of this is because of the function, but your toothbrush can also collect bacteria over time. Swapping out your toothbrush will ensure that you’re using an effective and safe tool to clean your mouth.
